MARBLE HOUSE

As an anniversary present for Mrs. Vanderbilt comes the  Marble House:  a Neo-Classical pavilion clad in shimmering white marble and decorated with a profusion of richly tinted marble veneers, mantels and ornaments, set off by gold fittings and trim.  Vicariously live out the luxury of the Marble House with our quilt inspired by motifs originated in the Mansion.
ROSECLIFF

Created as a showcase for extravagant summer entertainments, Rosecliff was modeled after the Grand Trianon in the great park of Versailles in France.  For the legendary balls and dinners held at Rosecliff during the Gilded Age, it boasted the largest ballroom in Newport.  The house was designed by Stanford White with interiors done by Allard & Sons of Paris.  Some of the splendor of time gone by was used for filming scenes from such movies as The Betsy,  The Great Gatsby, and True Lies.  Rosecliff is available for corporate events, weddings, and other social events through The Preservation Society of Newport County.  So even though the Gilded Age is long gone by, fabulous events still take place here at the house that was built for grand entertaining.  The romance associated with this house provided the inspiration for our quilt.
THE BREAKERS

The largest and most famous of the Newport “summer cottages.”  The Breakers was built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II and designed by the architect, Richard Morris Hunt.  The north and south wings of the house are joined by a two-story arched loggia in the Palladian manner.  The wall from the Great Hall is almost entirely of glass, affording an expansive view of the ocean from inside.  It is a Renaissance Revival structure built without limitations of scale or expense.  The wonderful hand-carved motifs used in the decor provide inspiration for our wonderful coverlet.
THE ELMS

One of America’s most prestigious mansions was the summer residence of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind.  He engaged fellow Philadelphian architect Horace Trumbauer to design the exterior of the house modeled after mid-18th century French chateau d’Asnieres outside of Paris.  The interiors and furnishings of The Elms were designed by Allard & Sons of Paris.  The motifs in our quilt are inspired from the architectural moldings found in the ceilings of the mansion.
